Associate Professor Paola Ferroni is the Head of the Centre for International
Health. A/Prof Ferroni has been working in international settings for many
years developing teaching courses and supervising student research in various
countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa, Malaysia, Hong Kong
and Bangladesh. Her eclectic practice is well reflected by her professional
background as she holds degrees in areas of sociology, health sciences and
epidemiology.
A/Professor Ferroni is especially interested in exploring health issues within
a socio-cultural frame of reference as many health problems are directly associated
with poor living conditions and influenced by social mores and gender issues.
Her current collaborative research activities on chronic renal failure and
herb nephropathy syndrome in Miri, Malaysia, and sexual health and ageing
in Western Australia, are good examples of studies where the socio-cultural
underpinnings are considered influential factors.
A/Professor Ferroni currently teaches research methods and supervises student
research in the DIH and PhD degrees. She is a Kellogg Fellow in Sexology and
is, to date, the only Australian recipient of that award. Her most recent book,
A Journey into Australian Health: Shanxi Doctors in Perth co-edited with
Dr Helen Fairnie & Professor Rosemary Coates, has been translated in Mandarin.
